PCB Assembly and Its Different Processes

The abbreviation PCB means printed circuit board. A PCB is one used to support electronic componen
ts mechanically while electronically connecting them. It makes use of so-called conductive pathways etched from various sheets of copper. After which, it is laminated to a non-conductive surface. When a PCB has a lot of electronic components, the PCB assembly is thereby formed.

PCB assembly processes

Once the printed circuit board has been finished, all electronic components are attached altogether. This makes it more functional to form the PCB Assembly. Here are some important processes involved:

Construction. There are two forms of construction used in order to make the assembly highly functional: through-hole construction and surface-mount construction. The former is one that requires component leads to be inserted into holes while the latter is one where components are rather placed on pads or any of the outer surfaces of the PCB. In both cases though, the components are fixed to the board mechanically or electrically with the aid of a molten metal solder.

Testing. This is one of the important steps to the PCB assembly process. A number of tests may be conducted ranging from visual and automated optical inspection to analog signature analysis and power-off testing. In-circuit and functional tests are also being conducted.

Coating. Once the PCB assembly have been constructed and tested, it is ready to undergo the process of conformal coating. This is important since it prevents the current in the PCB from leakage and corrosion. It is also significant in getting rid of cases of shorting after condensation.

Different materials are used to complete the PCB assembly process. The most common are waxes, silicone rubber, epoxy, acrylic and polyutherane. In some cases, engineering plastics are also being utilized.
